Watercolour White Rose Tutorial

In this two-part watercolour class, we’ll paint a delicate white rose using soft greys, subtle colour shifts, and layered techniques to build gentle transitions and realistic petal forms. Part 1 focuses on painting the rose itself, with detailed instruction to help you capture softness and depth without harsh outlines. In Part 2, we’ll add dimension by painting the leaves and background, creating a harmonious setting for our white rose.

What You’ll Learn:
  • How to simplify a complex subject with careful observation
  • Mixing soft greys using Brown Ochre, Burnt Sienna, and Winsor Lemon
  • Wet-on-wet and soft-edged techniques to shape petals
  • Creating depth with layering and tonal variation
  • Lifting colour to create subtle highlights
Artist’s Insight:
White roses can be deceptively tricky – they’re not really white at all. This tutorial teaches you how to see and paint the subtle shadows and undertones that define form and light. Filmed on Arches hot press watercolour board, it includes step-by-step guidance from start to finish, close-up demonstrations of tricky areas like the centre of the rose, and progress photos to follow along. Take your time with the layering, and enjoy the calm, meditative process of painting petal by petal.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
