Watercolour Technique Exercises - Bundle 2

In this beginner-friendly technique bundle, Louise brings together four focused lessons designed to help you build greater control and confidence with watercolour.

Rather than working through a detailed painting, each lesson uses simple exercises so you can concentrate fully on the technique. You'll explore how water, timing, brush control, and paint consistency influence the way watercolour behaves on the paper.

You'll practise preserving highlights, softening edges, preventing dark tide lines, and creating smooth colour blends—essential skills that can be applied to everything from flowers and birds to animals, landscapes, and everyday painting practice.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Reserving clean highlights while working on wet paper
  • Building colour in layers without losing light areas
  • Guiding paint closer to highlights with a damp brush
  • Softening hard edges before they become distracting
  • Lifting lost highlights with an eradicator brush
  • Understanding why dark, untidy edges form in wet-on-wet washes
  • Preventing tide lines and backruns through better water and timing control
  • Creating cleaner edges with improved brush and moisture control
  • Manually softening paint edges for smoother value transitions
  • Practising edge control in a dedicated watercolour journal
  • Blending two colours together smoothly on the paper
  • Creating soft colour transitions and gradients with patience and control
Artist’s Insight:
These lessons focus on the small technical skills that make a big difference in watercolour. Learning how to preserve a highlight, soften an edge, or prevent a dark tide line can completely change the way a painting feels. Instead of fighting the paint, you'll gain a better understanding of how water and pigment behave together.

Practising these exercises in a watercolour journal is a great way to build your own visual reference library over time. Although the exercises are simple, they form the foundation for cleaner washes, softer transitions, stronger highlights, and more confident painting.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
