Watercolour Agapanthus Tutorial

In this two-part tutorial, Louise shows you how she paints an unopened agapanthus in watercolour using a limited palette.

You’ll begin by mixing soft violets for the petals and working wet-on-wet to allow the colour to gently drift into the background. Louise demonstrates how to create lost edges, preserve highlights, and keep the petals soft, luminous, and delicate.

You’ll then move into the outer sheath, blending greens, yellows, violets, and soft neutral tones directly on the wet paper. The focus is on letting the paint and water work together while making small adjustments to edges, values, and colour temperature to build form.

This class is ideal for practising soft edges, controlled wet-on-wet washes, subtle colour transitions, and painting delicate botanical forms without overworking them.

What You’ll Learn:
  • How to mix soft violet tones for petals
  • How to paint wet-on-wet washes with control
  • How to create lost edges that drift into the background
  • How to preserve white paper for highlights
  • How to blend greens, yellows, violets, and neutrals softly
  • How to use small value changes to create form
  • How to keep delicate petals fresh and luminous
  • How to simplify florets into manageable petal shapes
Artist’s Insight:
This unopened agapanthus caught Louise’s eye because of its beautiful mix of soft violets, greens and warm earthy tones. While the flowers are considered a weed where she lives, they are still fascinating to paint.

Throughout this tutorial, the focus is on preserving softness by allowing colours to blend naturally, using lost edges, and keeping the painting fresh and luminous rather than overworked.

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
