Watercolour Swallows Tutorial

In this two-part tutorial, you’ll paint a trio of delicate swallows perched side by side, using soft layers and a loose approach to build depth, form, and atmosphere. Louise guides you through painting a moody grey background to frame the birds, then gradually develops their shapes with transparent washes and subtle feather textures.

What You’ll Learn:
  • How to paint a soft, blended background using wet-on-wet techniques
  • Mixing your own greys using a limited palette
  • Balancing soft and hard edges for feather texture and form
  • Building contrast and volume with transparent layers
  • Using dry brushing to add texture to the foreground
Artist’s Insight:
This is a slower, more meditative painting and a great exercise in patience and wash control. Louise shares how she painted the feathers without relying heavily on pencil lines, allowing the brush to do most of the work. Louise De Masi is a professional watercolour artist and qualified teacher based on the Mid North Coast of NSW, Australia. She has over 23 years’ experience as an artist and has been teaching watercolour online since 2011.

Louise’s calm, step-by-step approach focuses on helping students understand how watercolour works, so they can paint with more confidence and enjoyment.

Her work has been sold and licensed worldwide, and she has co-written a book on painting sea life in watercolour.
