Rose for Beginners

In this one-part beginner-friendly tutorial, Louise takes you step by step through painting a soft pink rose using a balanced triadic colour palette. This gently opening rose is an ideal subject for learning florals, allowing you to focus on soft edges, glowing colour, and natural form without unnecessary complexity. Along the way, you’ll explore both wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques while building strong foundations in water control and brush handling.

What You’ll Learn:
  • Working with a triadic colour scheme for harmony and vibrancy
  • Layering petals gradually to create depth and softness
  • Blending colour on wet paper versus dry paper
  • Controlling water and pigment for clean edges and smooth washes
  • Using transparent yellow and violet greys to create contrast
  • Adding highlights with titanium white for a crisp finish
Artist’s Insight:
Louise paints this rose from a photo of a bloom in her garden. Because the rose is only just opening, it’s less complex than a full bloom, making it perfect for beginners while still offering plenty of teaching moments. Throughout the class, Louise explains each decision as she goes, helping you build confidence with timing, brush control, and colour balance. This tutorial is not just about painting a pretty flower, it’s about learning how to approach watercolour with intention, patience, and enjoyment.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
