In this detailed two-part tutorial, we’ll paint a vibrant red poppy using my custom Schmincke watercolour palette. This class is ideal for intermediate to advanced artists who want to improve their skills in layering, masking, and brush control.
We start by painting the detailed centre of the poppy, focusing on the complex structure of the stamens, anthers, and ovary. I’ll show you how to build up texture and contrast using transparent yellow, transparent ochre, and custom greens made from French Ultramarine and Transparent Yellow. Once dry, we’ll mask off the centre to protect it while we move on to the petals.
The petals are painted with scarlet red and madder red dark using wet-on-wet techniques to achieve soft transitions and bold colour.
There are 13 progress photos to guide you, and I’ve included all the reference files and line drawing for you to download. We’ll take our time, and I’ll walk you through every step in real time.
Here's what you get with this class.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”
“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”
“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
