Watercolour "Hummingbird with Fuchsia" Tutorial

Embark on a vibrant artistic journey with the "Hummingbird with Fuchsia Tutorial," designed for intermediate-level artists. This class teaches you how to capture the dynamic beauty of a hummingbird in motion around fuchsia flowers, blending precision techniques with expressive colour choices for a lively and elegant composition.

What You’ll Learn:
  • How to combine elements from two different reference photos into a cohesive design.
  • Using wet-on-wet techniques for delicate colour transitions and atmosphere.
  • Employing wet-on-dry techniques for crisp details and vivid textures.
  • Exploring a four-colour Schmincke palette to create vibrancy and harmony.
Artist’s Insight:
Louise shares her process of uniting two separate references to design a dynamic composition that feels natural and balanced. She highlights the joy of working with bright colour contrasts between the bird and flowers, encouraging artists to pay close attention to the interplay of softness and detail. By layering washes with intention and refining only where necessary, she shows how to maintain both delicacy and vibrancy in a single piece.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
