Watercolour "Boats on Still Water" Tutorial

Portrait of Louise De Masi

Embark on a seascape adventure with the “Boats on Still Water Tutorial.” Ideal for intermediate painters or beginners with some experience, this tutorial provides an in-depth guide to capturing the serene beauty of boats on calm waters. This class focuses on honing your watercolour skills with a specific emphasis on painting water and boats in a simplified composition.

What You’ll Learn:

  • Seascape Techniques: Develop your ability to paint water using various shades of blue, such as Antwerp Blue, and learn to substitute with other blues like French Ultramarine, Cobalt Blue, or Prussian Blue.
  • Masking Fluid Use: Gain proficiency in using masking fluid to preserve areas of the watercolour paper untouched by paint, particularly for the boats, which allows for more freedom when painting the water.
  • Reference Photo Manipulation: Learn how to crop and adjust a reference photo to focus on specific elements, simplifying the scene for a more manageable painting project.

Louise shares her personal learning journey in painting seascapes, making this tutorial not only a technical guide but also a motivational lesson in tackling new and challenging subjects.

“I am taking an in person class and I learned more here today [in this YouTube video] than I have in 6 weeks of the class… Signing up based on this video!”

“You are an outstanding teacher and are always so explicit with your instructions that you make it almost impossible for us to fail when following your tutorials. You have a wealth of information that you are always so happy to share with us. I have not as yet found another teacher who teaches as well as you and I have certainly watched thousands of You Tube tutorials. You are the best and deserve all the recognition you get!”

Marion

“Just finished watching this tutorial (I always watch them before starting to paint them) and I wanted to say it's so helpful to have the reference photo showing while you paint. I find myself thinking what I would do next and where I would add color and then when you do it too I know I'm learning -- even before I put paint to paper. Thank you for your explanations and thorough descriptions of what you are doing. You are the best teacher!”
